Jersey is a remnant of the Duchy of Normandy to which the Kings of England (who were also the Dukes of Normandy) were able to hold onto. The Germans occupied Jersey from July 1, 1940 until May 9, 1945.
The British Pound Sterling (GBP) is and has been legal tender in Jersey. The first coins issued especially for Jeresey ere silver 18 pence and 3 shilling tokens produced in 1812. In 1834 English currency was established as the sole legal tender in Jersey, though until 1877 ther ewere 13 Jersey pennies to the shilling.
Jersey has issued its own Pound (JEP) banknotes since 1840, and it currently issues its own banknotes and numerous coins. These issues are not legal tender. Germany issued banknotes denominated in Pounds while they occupied Jersey during World War II. The Pound was divisible into 20 Shillings and 240 Pence until February 15, 1971 when the Pound was made divisible into 100 Pence. The Treasury of the States of New Jersey has issued banknotes since 1963. Bank of England banknotes are legal tender in Jersey. Jersey banknotes, are not legal tender, but are commonly used in circulation in Jersey. |
