Egypt occupied and annexed the Sudan in 1821/22. General Gordon's attempts to end the slave trade led to a Muslim revolt in 1885, and the British reconquered the Sudan in 1898. The Anglo-Egyptian Sudan condominium was established in Sudan on January 19, 1899. Sudan gained self-government on January 9, 1954, and the Republic of the Sudan gained its independence on January 1, 1956. The Sudan became a Democratic Republic on May 25, 1969.

Throughout its history, Sudan relied on coins imported from Egypt. Ptolemaic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Turkish coins all circulated in Sudan. British Pound Sterling (GBP) coins and Egyptian Pound (EGP) banknotes were used in the Sudan while it was part of the Anglo-Egyptian condominium. General Gordon issued the first paper money and the Mahdi issued the first coins in Sudan in 1885. In general, Egyptian banknotes and British coins circulated within the country.

After Sudan gained its independence, it introduced the Sudanese Pound (SDP), at par with the Egyptian Pound, on April 8, 1957. Sudan supplemented the Pound with the Dinar (SDD) in 1992 with 1 Dinar equal to 10 Pounds. The Pound was eliminated as of August 1, 1999. The Pound was divisible into 100 Piastres or 1000 Milliam. On July 1, 2007 a new Sudan Pound (SDG) replaced the Sudan Dinar (SDD) with 100 Sudan Dinar = 1 New Sudan Pound.

The Sudanese Treasury printed banknotes in 1955, but they were not issued. The Sudan Currency Board issued banknotes between 1956 and 1961, and the Bank of Sudan issued banknotes from 1961 on. A currency confiscation of high denomination notes occurred on May 12, 1991. In 2002, the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement had their own Dinar printed to replace the Sudanese Dinar printed in the north.

Signature title in 1 lines of Arabic text (Governor). The reverse depicts the Bank of Sudan building. There is a watermark on this note depicting the coat of arms.

This is a 1991 (AH1411) dated note that is valued at 5 Pounds. The note is red, orange and violet on multicolored underprint. The obverse features cattle on the left and a map of Sudan in the center. Signature title in 1 lines of Arabic text (Governor). The reverse is red-orange on multicolored underprint and depicts the Bank of Sudan building. There is a watermark shwon on this note of the coat of arms.
